#BehindTheScenes

Grocery Clash was the biggest game we did during our studies. The entire semester was dedicated to developing our own 3D game engine and creating a game built on our tech.

As you may expect, making the entire engine basically from scratch (we used MonoGame Framework as a starting point) required a lot of work. Especially, when you have only two programmers who are simultaneously working on a game. It was a great challenge that really deepened my understanding of the inner workings of game engines and helped me realise why various engine features are made in a certain way.

Definitely, the project wouldn't be the same without additional help from our uni and from game industry mentors. Grocery Clash happened to be a part of project POWER - a one year long mentorship programme, where we got the chance to work side by side with a professional producer and were able to present our games in a few gamedev companies and collect valuable feedback. So, big thanks to Mateusz Janczewski, Jarosław Andrzejczak and Artur Ganszyniec for taking the game to another level.

We presented the game at the 9th Team Game Development Championship (ZTGK) and the game's reception really exceeded our expectations. People praised the game for its satisfying, juicy gameplay, extraordinary theme and the quality of the tech. We got into the TOP3 in Game Development category and received special awards from Techland, 11bit Studios, SUPERHOT. Speaking of SUPERHOT... the whole event was one of the main reasons why I landed a job in the company, two months later. The competition was a fantastic reward for countless hours spent on the project and it is a day worth remembering.
